What is Houseboat Contents cover?

If your vessel is a Houseboat, this option under our boat insurance policy can cover your contents (i.e. household goods, furnishings, clothes and other personal items) for loss or damage caused by various risks while on the vessel, including fire, theft storm and flood.

You can specify the sum insured for higher value items, and select a lump sum limit of up to £40,000 to cover your other contents. You can also select what level of excess you wish to pay.

There are various exclusions which apply to this option, such as there being no cover for theft unless from within a locked cabin or cabinet, or damage deliberately caused by anyone living on the Vessel.

The Houseboat Contents option is only available if your vessel is a Narrowboat or Motor Barge which is your permanent residence and which is used to actively navigate inland waterways.

What is Houseboat Contents Accidental Damage cover?

This option will extend the risks covered under the Houseboat Contents option of the boat insurance policy to include accidental damage to your vessel’s contents. 

There are various additional exclusions which apply to this option, such as damage to watches or clocks caused by accidental overwinding.

This option is only available if you have also selected the ‘Houseboat Contents’ option.

What is Personal Possessions and Money cover?

This option can provide cover for your or your immediate family’s Personal Possessions while they are away from the vessel.

Higher value items can be insured for a specific value, while you can select a lump sum up to £3,000 to cover your other, everyday possessions while away from the boat. You can even add cover for up to £500 for Money, and this will also cover money kept on the vessel. Claims under the Personal Possession section will be subject to the contents excess you select.

There are various exclusions which apply to this option, such as there being no cover for loss or damage to business equipment, or for theft of an unattended bike unless it is securely locked to an immovable object.

This option is only available if you have also selected the ‘Houseboat Contents’ option.

What is Student Contents cover?

This option can extend the cover provided under the Houseboat Contents option of the boat insurance policy to also apply to your or your immediate family’s contents that are being kept in student lodgings while you or they are attending university, college, or boarding school.

You select what cover limit you require up to £5,000 per student and also how many students you wish to cover to a maximum of 4. Claims under the Student Contents section will be subject to the contents excess you select.

There are various additional exclusions which apply to this option, such as there being no cover for theft or attempted theft unless there are signs of forced entry to the student accommodation.

This option is only available if you have also selected the ‘Houseboat Contents’ option.

What is Alternative Accommodation cover?

This option under the boat insurance policy can pay towards the cost of alternative accommodation for you and your immediate family if your vessel is a houseboat and it becomes uninhabitable following insured loss or damage. This option can also cover temporary accommodation costs for your pets, plus temporary storage costs for your houseboat contents.

You select what cover limit you require up to £25,000, and there is no excess for you to pay in respect of a claim on this cover.

There are various exclusions which apply to this option, such as there being no cover for the costs associated with keeping livestock or for costs incurred after your houseboat has become habitable again.

This option is only available if you have also selected the ‘Houseboat Contents’ option.

What is Personal Liability cover (Boat Contents)?

This cover can help protect you and your immediate family from your or their potential liabilities to other people for death, injury, or property damage, incurred while away from the vessel. Cover may also be provided for other costs and expenses incurred in defending such claims.

You select what cover limit you require up to £3 million, and there is no excess for you to pay in respect of a claim under this cover.

There are various exclusions which apply to this section, such as there being no cover for claims arising from your ownership of the vessel insured (see 'What is Third Party Liability cover?' for details of such cover), or for claims arising out of the use of motorised vehicles.

This cover is included automatically when you have selected the ‘Houseboat Contents’ option under the boat insurance policy.
